One hundred years have passed since that decisive year that led to the foundation of the Portuguese Republic.
1908 was the year of social and political upheaval, and the emergence of a new social class: the aborted coup of January 28, the Regicide, the ephemeral reign of King D. Manuel II, the “acclamation”, the April elections, the Republican victory in the Lisboa Chambers. In 1908 history was made.
Today, one hundred years after these events, Lisboa City Council organises an exhibit as part of the Centenary Commemorations of the City Council of Republican Lisboa (1908-2008), where the story of how the first republican city council in Lisboa was formed.
This exhibit entitled “To the Ballot Box for Republican Lisboa! So it was 100 years ago…” reveals the historical facts, the icons of the period, revisiting Lisboa of 1908, the elected councillors, their impact on the city – all this and more is portrayed with some documents being exhibited in public for the first time.
Until March 30, Monday to Friday, 10am-8pm, Paços do Concelho exhibit gallery, Praça do Município (metro station: Baixa-Chiado or Terreiro do Paço). Guided visits on Thursdays 11am and 2pm, on Sundays visits form part of “ On Sunday Terreiro do Paço belongs to the People” at 11am and 3pm. Free entry.
