Korda, Known Unknown

The Cuban Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez, “Korda” (Havana, 1928 – Paris, 2001) will always and above anything else be the author of Che Guevara’s photograph – entitled “Heroic Warrior” – that acted as a symbol to generations and saw thousands of interpretations throughout the decades.

Little remains of this photography other than that of a saturated image of senses different to its original context: the Cuban Revolution.

In the eyes of the general public the rest of Korda’s work is simply a political testament, highlighted by some iconographic images. The exhibit “Korda,Known Unknown” features 200 photographs, mostly unpublished, selected from thousands of negatives of the photographer and taken from personal archives of friends and colleagues.

Its aim is to revisit a decade in the photographer’s life and career (1956-1968), covering themes as diverse as fashion, the people, women, the sea and naturally, the Cuban Revolution and its leaders.
