MUDE – The Fashion and Design Museum - invites you to travel through time “on a scooter” - traversing 25 years of the history of this charming motorised vehicle, via this exhibition.
“There she goes, beautiful and safe. Scooters from the João Seixas Collection”, is the title of this exhibition, thus paraphrasing the stanza by the poet, Luís Vaz de Camões, who described Leonor as she walked barefoot to the natural spring, beautiful, but not safe.
The evolution in the design, silhouette, form, colours and materials of the various models now on display at MUDE, will simultaneously remind older generations and introduce younger generations to a collection of “vespas” that several decades ago raced through the streets of Lisbon, Portugal and the world.
Altered and adapted between 1945 and 1970 - in tune with changing mentalities and socio-cultural contexts - visitors are certain to be surprised by many of the models on display, while some will have already driven identical models. Nowadays, with modern daring designs, many other scooters continue to circulate through the streets.
Curiously, some call these models scooters, others call them vespas and others still call them lambrettas… Notwithstanding these different designations - which vary in function of the interlocutor - the charm of this machine appeals to all.
