Monstra 2013

Lisboa Animation Film Festival

From March 7 to 17, Cinema São Jorge, Avenida Liberdade (metro station: Avenida); Cinema City Alvalade, Avenida de Roma (metro station: Alvalade) and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Avenida de Berna (metro station: Praça de Espanha).

For the first time, MONSTRA - Animation Film Festival will pay tribute to the cinematography of two countries: Brazil and Spain, in what will be the largest edition of the Festival to date.

The 12th edition of Monstra will therefore be marked by a retrospective of Brazilian and Spanish film, which are "a lot more connected to their ethnology and ethnography, than other international filmmaking."

The festival begins on March 7 with the retrospective of Brazil, showing over 100 films from this country and honouring filmmaker Chico Liberato, who will present in Lisboa all his work, from "Arua Boi" in 1983 to his most recent feature film "Ritos de Passagem" (Rites of Passage), a European debut. As of March 11, the festival focuses on Spanish film animation, with programs from the Basque Country, Madrid Autonomous Community, Galicia, Valencia, Catalonia and a tribute to the Spanish director, Segundo de Chomón.

"From up on Poppy Hill" by Goro Miyazaky (son of the renowned Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki), "Letter to Momo" and "Grave of Fireflies", by the celebrated director Isao Takahata, will all premiere in Portugal, as part of the Japanese retrospective at Monstra. The program also includes a retrospective of Japanese director Mirai Misué who will be in Lisboa to present his films and hold a masterclass about his work.

With the younger ones in mind, there will also be films on the weekends for parents and children, highlights which include "The Happy Cricket and the Giant Insects" and "Os Brichos", two Brazilian feature films.
