Baixa's Tradition
To better view the river, why not descend the hill to the Baixa. There one finds many typical Lisboa esplanades, the muse of many intellectuals. The nest of poets, writers, singers and other artists, in the Baixa one feels the weight of tradition. In Rossio, start your trip at Suiça, stuck between cosmopolitan Praça D. Pedro V and the popular Praça da Figueira. Enjoy the varied cakes and salty titbits made at the café, considered amongst the best in Lisboa. Only a short walk away, on Avenida da Liberdade, the various kiosks with esplanades crawl up both sides of the avenue. The white metal chairs, trees and shade, served with music and night lighting entice one to sit and read or talk for hours. And if hunger strikes, there is no concern since many serve light or more fancy ware. But let us not get stuck here. We will walk down to Rossio and from there walk up to Chiado.
