Lisboa’s festivities kick off at the Alameda D. Afonso Henriques at 7:30pm on the 1st, with the show “Travessia” by the Basinga circus company, with artist Tatiana-Mosio Bongongo balancing on a tightrope suspended 30 metres above the ground to the musical accompaniment of the Banda da Armada.
The closing ceremony, a celebration of the life and work of the Portuguese singer António Variações, will take place in the Jardim Torre de Belém at 10pm on the 29th. This will be a unique concert involving a number of artists, including Ana Bacalhau, Conan Osiris and Lena d’Água, who will give voice to the music of Variações arranged for symphonic instrumentation.
During the month, the festivities will take place in city neighbourhoods like Alfama, Castelo, Mouraria, Bica and Bairro Alto, which will be transformed into authentic ballrooms, complete with music, dancing and entertainment, while other neighbourhoods, including Marvila, Campolide, Estrela, Belém, Arroios, and many more, will be joining in... Just follow the music or the aroma of grilled sardines, peppers and manjerico - or globe basil - that are characteristic of the Santos Populares festivities – and you will definitely find a party.
And as for the food: nothing is more typical than sardines on bread, grilled pork, roasted peppers and chouriço and the traditional caldo verde soup that you can try for yourself at several locations.
