Ensemble Darcos

Beethoven’s strings | The Ensemble Darcos pays tribute to Ludwig van Beethoven with some of the German composer’s string quartets.

While Haydn is referred to as the «father» of the string quartet and Mozart is responsible for having raised it to even higher levels, Beethoven is the one who transformed it and through it told the history of chamber music and the way in which this genre was played, listened to and used in nineteenth-century society.

His first compositions of this kind of music appeared late on his career, but they still continued in the same vein as the works of Haydn and Mozart. In a second phase, the Razumovsky quartets were the most popular of his works in this field and expanded its scope by incorporating a new level of heightened emotion. The last of these works were also the last of Beethoven’s compositions in the final phase of his musical production.
