Skip the usual tourist routes and come and discover another castle close to Lisbon. In an area little visited by tourists, this castle is a special find.
Come and discover a 15th-century castle in one of the least visited areas in the Lisbon region. Beside the river, after passing Sacavém and before reaching Santa Iria da Azóia, you’ll find Pirescoxe and its castle. Built in the late-Gothic style by the viscounts of Castelo Branco as their residence, this castle-like palace on a mount with a magnificent view of the river’s course owes its name, according to legend, to Pêro Escouche, or Pires, o Coxo (the Lame). Choose the version you like the best and don’t miss this old fortified house which still has its original towers and battlements. Nowadays it’s a cultural venue with an auditorium, art gallery and exhibition rooms. Skip the usual tourist routes and come and discover this special castle so close to the centre of Lisbon.
