Vasco da Gama Aquarium

The Vasco da Gama Aquarium, located at the gates of Lisbon, is not only an Aquarium, it is also a Museum. A Museum born of a prince's dream and his ambition to know the depths of the ocean.

Visiting the Vasco da Gama Aquarium is to allow yourself to board the Yacht Amelia, belonging to the Portuguese royal family, sailing along the coast of Sesimbra in the company of the then King of Portugal, Carlos I. From the ship's logbook to the Vasco da Gama Aquarium, in a trip between the depths of the sea and the sea slopes where we can contemplate only by sea.

It´s an institution of international interest wich qualifies trainers and taxidermists from across the globe, and strives to continuously improve its important role as a Living Natural History Museum.
 
It´s possible to observe rare specimens and other biological specimens, mainly molluscs, freshwater fish, aquatic birds, turtles and marine mammals. Has also specimens of other species, especially with regards to native and tropical fauna marine fish and both live and stuffed malacological specimens.

The Vasco da Gama Aquarium is one of the oldest museum aquariums in the world and has been visited by successive generations of families since its opening on May 20th, 1898. It is a historical heritage that promotes Portuguese aquatic life and it has the private King Carlos I Oceanographic Collection.

After renovations, now has a cafeteria with exterior terrace and an auditorium wich functions as a multipurpose space.
