The King Carlos Museum of the Sea is housed in the former Cascais’ Sporting Club. The club, founded in 1879, was set up by the then prince to promote sports and host social events.
The Museum of the Sea, inaugurated in 1992, is about the sea and the people who live with it.
The museum is organised by theme: Cascais on the Shipwreck Route (underwater archaeology); Biodiversity (fish, mammals and sea birds plus marine shells and fossils); People of the Sea (the lives and habits of the Cascais fishing community and traditional fishing methods); Navy and Navigation (historical and technical focus); Marine Fossils (the museum’s collection of marine fossils and the King Carlos and Oceanography Centre, which reconstructs the main exploits of the king and his team aboard the yacht Amélia).
