In Search of a Portuguese Sound
Unlike other European capitals, Portugal resisted the development of a national symphonic culture in the 19th century.
At the end of the monarchy and during the Estado Novo, the debate on identity and nationalism inspired composers such as Vianna da Motta, Frederico de Freitas, Lopes-Graça, and Joly Braga Santos to create remarkable orchestral music.
This concert, in collaboration with the São Carlos National Theater, revisits ballets by Freitas and Braga Santos, reviving a virtually forgotten orchestral repertoire.
