Palácio Nacional de Mafra

The Royal Convent of Mafra is the most important Portuguese Baroque monument, encompassing a Basilica, a Royal Palace and a Convent of the Order of St. Francis. It was also briefl y occupied by a group of canons, followers of St. Augustine (1771/1791). It was ordered built in the 18th century by King João V, in order to secure the succession of his marriage to Maria Anna of Austria, or to cure a serious illness. Constructed of the marble stone of the region, the edifice occupies an area of c. 38.000mq. Master of Works was Johann Friedrich Ludwig, a German goldsmith who trained as an architect in Italy.The fi rst stone was laid in 1717 before the Patriarch and the entire Court, and on 22nd of October 1730, the King’s birthday, the Basilica was solemnly consecrated, dedicated to Our Lady and St. Anthony. The Ward is a rare example in all Europe and the Library is one of the most important of the XVIII century with 34.000 volumes.
