LEFFEST - Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival'21

[ November ] This year marks the 15th anniversary of LEFFEST (Lisbon & Sintra Film Festival), which will take place between the 10th and 21st of November, between Lisbon and Sintra.

Eight cinematographically diverse films have already been chosen for the Official Selection – In Competition, which is to be rounded out with the addition of a few more films, to be announced shortly. In the Out of Competition section we now have 14 films, including the long-awaited The French Dispatch, by Wes Anderson, which will be the opening film of this 15th edition of LEFFEST, Benedetta, by Paul Verhoeven, Parallel Mothers, by Pedro Almodóvar, Paris, 13th District, by Jacques Audiard, and The Card Counter, by Paul Schrader.

This edition’s jury is composed of: Emir Kusturica, director, screenwriter, actor and musician, who will give a concert with his band, The No Smoking Orchestra, to close this 15th edition; writer J.M. Coetzee, who in 2003 was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature; director, screenwriter and producer Maria Speth; and Dolores Chaplin, actress (and granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin).

The core of this 15th LEFFEST centers on the celebration of Roma Culture, around which we will organize three historical debates (focusing on three moments: from Al-Andalus to “Gran-Redada” in 1749; the persecution and genocide of the Roma by the Nazis and during World War II; the current situation in western europe). We will also screen several films, of which the following stand out: a small tribute to Tony Gatlif, who will be present for the premiere of Tom Medina (Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival), and also a focus on the artist and holocaust survivor Ceija Stojka, with an exhibition, for the first time in Portugal, of her paintings, as well as readings of her texts and screenings of the films Ceija Stojka and Unter den Brettern Gras by Karin Berger. Highlights include concerts by Josémi Carmona trio (with Pepe Habichuela, guest artist), Farruquito, Taraf de Caliu, Mónika Lakatos and Ricardo Ribeiro.

The Tributes and Retrospectives section is dedicated to seven great names in the cultural scene: New Zealand director and screenwriter Jane Campion; the Japanese filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who will be with us during this edition, namely to present the national pre-premieres of his two most recent films, Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (Silver Bear and Jury Grand Prix at the Berlin Festival) and Drive My Car (Official Selection in Competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Best Screenplay Prize, the FIPRESCI Prize and the Ecumenical Jury Prize); Romanian filmmaker Cristi Puiu, whose work is a reflection on moral values and philosophical conceptualizations; German filmmaker Maria Speth, who won the Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival with her latest film Herr Bachmann und seine klasse, to premiere in this edition of the LEFFEST; and acclaimed director Mike Dibb, who will present his new documentary Painted With My Hair, a world premiere. We also dedicated a special focus to the theatre with Romeo Castellucci, through the exhibition of filmed stagings and a masterclass, and “Work in Progress”, a focus on the work of director and producer Rodrigo Areias.

"God died and his death was the life of the world", Philipp Mainländer's statement is the premise of the thematic cycle "The Death of God", curated by Alexey Artamonov, Denis Ruzaev and Ines Branco López. How can we make sense of this seemingly irresolvable and impossible paradox - the idea of God being dead and yet the life of the world, spiritual life in particular, continuing despite it? We find answers in cinema.

In the 15th edition of LEFFEST, we come back to CinemART, a section that seeks to explore cinema through its fusion with other arts. LEFFEST will screen three films by Henrique Pina and, in a national premiere, Memory Box, the new film by artists and filmmakers Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige.

Through the Educational Service, a parallel section of LEFFEST in collaboration with the Sintra Municipality, especially dedicated to the school community and senior public, the festival recognizes its importance in the training and development of children and young people, and lives up to the responsibility. This special program for the enjoyment, reflection and discussion of cinema, is designed to stimulate artistic taste and critical thinking, and encourage active participation in the community.

We are hoping to start selling tickets for the concerts on the 1st of October and for the screenings on the 21st of October.
