Dido and Aeneas –Ambronay European Baroque Academy
CCB is to once again host the prestigious Ambronay European Baroque Academy, this time with Dido and Aeneas.
CCB is to once again host the prestigious Ambronay European Baroque Academy, this time with Dido and Aeneas, under the direction of maestro and celebrated tenor Paul Agnew. This opera is without a doubt the jewel in the crown of English baroque opera, and the way in which Purcell stages the libretto and score is extremely innovative. He manages to incorporate the then fashionable dances of French opera, without betraying the taste for the aria typical of the Italians. Dido’s final aria is one of the most stunning laments ever composed for opera. The score at times hews close to the libretto, and at others rebuffs it, illustrating its meaning or giving a sense of its limits. This opera of Henry Purcell will be accompanied by excerpts from the little known Dido and Aeneas by the French baroque composer Henry Desmarest. 24th July at 9 pm, Main Auditorium, Centro Cultural de Belém, Praça do Império. Tickets: from 7.5 euros.
