The Seduction of Modernity
Seduction of Modernity revisits the 19th century to highlight literature’s importance as a primary influence on modern spirit artworks.
Curated by Maria de Aires Silveira, this Seduction of Modernity revisits the 19th century to highlight literature’s importance as a primary influence on artworks marked by the modern spirit and which stood as a provocation against institutionalised tastes.
The chronological markers in the National Museum of Contemporary Art’s collection begin in 1850, with the dissenting of Romanticism and proceed through the final decades of the nineteenth century, touching on the modern perspectives of the landscape and portrait artists of the Grupo do Leão.
Works that can be seen included the portrait of Antero de Quental painted by Bordalo Pinheiro or "O Desterrado" (The Exiled), a sculpture by Soares dos Reis.
Until 15th April 2018, Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm, Museu do Chiado, Rua Serpa Pinto (metro: Baixa-Chiado). Tickets: 4.50 euros.
