Every year, the people of Lisboa greet their patron saint, Saint Anthony. And, taking advantage of the warm nights, ideal for eating out in the open-air, the alfacinhas (an affectionate term for natives of Lisboa) commemorate from 12th to 13th June, with a series of initiatives as the Marchas Populares, a costumed parade of the traditional neighbourhoods down the Avenida da Liberdade and the Arraiais (street parties) at all city neighborhoods in which the grilled sardines are an essential feature. A party that is uniquely lisboeta, which every year draws thousands of people onto the streets of the city and that only winds down early the next morning.
