Convent of Arrábida

Discover a unique convent in an amazing place close to Lisbon. In the middle of the Serra da Arrábida Nature Park, this convent could be taken from a fairytale.

When you visit Lisbon, set aside a day to explore the amazing Arrábida Nature Park. Besides the pretty hidden beaches and views of the stunning Sado estuary you’ll see as you climb the hills, the convent da Arrábida awaits, concealed by the vegetation, in a layout that’s unique anywhere in the country. The cells are spread across the slope and look like a village of hermits, a characteristic of this Franciscan convent founded in 1542 by Frei Martinho de Santa Maria. There are also cells dug into the rock at the top of the hill, beside the Hermitage of Memória, where the first four friars established themselves. Nowadays, the convent belongs to the Fundação do Oriente and you have to book a visit in advance, which are scheduled for Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Come and find pure spirituality in the midst of the Arrábida hills.
