Navy Planetarium

The Navy Planetarium was inaugurated on the 20th of july 1965 by Head of State, Admiral Américo Thomaz, and Minister for Public Works, Azeredo Perdigão.

Come to the Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium and get closer to the sky, with a 25 meters (82ft) dome, feel like an astronaut among the stars. In what is one of the largest planetariums in the world, we have several sessions that allow us to understand what goes on beyond what eyes reach.

In addition to the Auditorium, it also has a Gallery with several themed exhibitions, an Astronomical Observatory (in recovery), and a Library holding approximately 1000 books. It was inaugurated on July 20th, 1965, by the occasion of the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the death of Calouste Gulbenkian. The Planetarium bears the flag of a Live Science center and is an active part of several national and international astronomy projects.

Here we can understand the difficulties that sailors of yore had when navigating the unknown oceans, and also, we study the challenges that today's sailors face, trying to know the infinite space.

There are sessions to the various age groups and in diverse languages. There is also available special exhibitions for teachers, younger audiences and activities for school groups.
