Einzelheiten

The Maritime Museum presents the temporary exhibition “Saving Lives at Sea – Neutral Portugal in a World at War (1939–1945)”, running from 16 January to 18 October 2026.

The exhibition invites the public to learn about the humanitarian role played by Portugal during the Second World War, highlighting the rescue operations carried out at sea by Portuguese nationals in territories under national administration.

Through artefacts, documents and historical accounts, the exhibition reveals stories of courage and solidarity that enabled the rescue of around 6,000 people of different nationalities, particularly in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

At the same time, it pays tribute to the Portuguese seafarers who lost their lives during the conflict.

This initiative, supported by Lisbon City Council, is taking place at the Maritime Museum in Lisbon, encouraging reflection on neutrality, humanity and historical memory.
