After conducting the Gulbenkian Choir for St. Matthew’s Passion in 2023, Martina Batič is now focusing on St. John Passion, another of Bach’s masterpieces of sacred music.
Premiered on Good Friday 1724 in Leipzig, the St John Passion recounts the ordeal and suffering of Christ on his way to crucifixion, based on John’s words in the Gospel, giving it a less earthly aura by emphasizing its divine origin.
Bach’s writing accompanies the last moments of Jesus Christ’s life with touching grandeur.
