Treasures from Kings

Masterpieces from the Terra Sancta Museum! ‘O Tesouro dos Reis’ is an exhibition made up of donations made by European Catholic monarchs to various churches in this territory over the course of 500 years.

Travelling from Jerusalem to Portugal for the first time, ‘O Tesouro dos Reis’ is an exhibition made up of donations made by European Catholic monarchs to various churches in this territory over the course of 500 years.

With donations as its central theme, it includes European productions such as the church lamp sent to Jerusalem by the king of Portugal, D.

João V, and the baldachin that housed a monstrance or crucifix, donated by Charles VII, king of Naples.

The exhibition also offers a journey through the ancient history and spiritual symbolism of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, as well as the role played by the Custody of the Holy Land.

Calouste Gulbenkian's connection to the Holy Land is also evoked, with the presentation of a 15th century Armenian illuminated manuscript given by the collector to the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
