Just as there were no civilisations without agriculture, there were never any civilisations without communication networks.

Since the dawn of writing, plants have been silent mediators of messages. From papyrus to paper, words found their natural support in plants. Iron gall ink, obtained from the tannins of oak galls, gave permanence to text; vegetable gums sealed letters; and the postage stamp, symbol of the message in transit, kept botany at the centre of modern communication.
