Communication is Natural. Botany in Communications | This exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the history of human communication, exploring its deep and ongoing relationship with the plant world.
Just as there were no civilisations without agriculture, there were never any civilisations without communication networks.
Since the dawn of writing, plants have been silent mediators of messages. From papyrus to paper, words found their natural support in plants. Iron gall ink, obtained from the tannins of oak galls, gave permanence to text; vegetable gums sealed letters; and the postage stamp, symbol of the message in transit, kept botany at the centre of modern communication.
