The strength of silence and the “infinite solitude” that cross the pictorial universe of Juan Genovés (1930 – 2020) are revealed to the public in the exhibition Juan Genovés – The Intensity of Silence, the first dedicated to the work of the Spanish artist to be held in Portugal, on display at the Cascais Cultural Center between June 4 and September 11, 2022, in an initiative by the D. Luís I Foundation and the Municipal City Hall of Cascais within the scope of the Bairro dos Museus programme.

Celebrated as one of the most important names in contemporary Spanish art, Juan Genovés was born in 1930 in Valencia and grew up under the fascist regime of Francisco Franco, which intimately influenced the themes he explored in his artistic production. Aesthetically fascinating and deeply rooted in social and political realism, his paintings are a symbol of the democratic demand and anti-Franco struggle in Spain.

Chronologically organized, the fifty-eight paintings presented in Juan Genovés – The Intensity of Silence reveal a restless painter, sharp and aware of the artist's role in society. His firm belief in art as a vehicle for transformation and his attention to social and political phenomena led him to participate in some of the most important artistic movements in post-war Spain: Los Siete (1949), Parpallós (1956) and Hondo ( 1960).

The exhibition begins with works from the 60s, when the artist decides to use his paintings as a means of expression without censorship.
