*Measure for Measure* is a play by William Shakespeare written in 1603 or 1604 and published in 1623, originally classified as a comedy, although its complex plot makes it difficult to categorise, notes director Ignacio Garcia, who identifies the recurring themes in Shakespeare’s work that we find here: “The goodness or corruption of power, the usurpation of identity, justice or injustice meted out by governments, love and lust that become entangled and intertwined until they merge, loyalty and betrayal as the two sides of the human condition itself”.

The atmosphere in which the characters move is one of intrigue, lies, betrayal and immorality. “To measure and be measured, always and ceaselessly; to judge and be judged without respite; to live with the misery of constant, permanent and merciless scrutiny, with hope as the sole remedy, because, as the text itself says: the wretched have no other remedy but hope”.

The director IGNACIO GARCÍA is well known to TMJB audiences: in 2017 he directed *The History of the Siege of Lisbon* by José Saramago; in 2019 he worked with the CTA again on *To Reign After Death* by Luis de Guevara; and in 2021 he directed *Neither Eats Nor Lets Eat* by Lope de Vega.
