Pedro Alexandrino de Carvalho was the most prolific painter active in Lisbon in the decades marked by the capital’s reconstruction following the great earthquake of 1755.
He began to make his name as a painter from 1780, developing his career with multiple commissions.
A fast and tireless worker, he was responsible for producing many ceiling and altar paintings for churches in Lisbon and other locations, and also contributed to the decoration of various palaces.
His graphic work, some of the best examples of which can be seen here, enables us to get to know one of the most successful Portuguese artists of the late-baroque generation.
Less well-known than some of his contemporaries, who benefited from training abroad, he nonetheless surpassed them, with very personal compositional schemes that revealed the freedom and dynamism of his painting.
