Puppets that keep time
A journey into the world of portuguese animation puppets

100 years ago, the first known Portuguese animation film was released (O Pesadelo de António Maria, Joaquim Guerreiro, 1923).

Under the sign of this centenary, the 16th Monstra exhibition at the Marioneta Museum proposes a journey to the past and present time of Portuguese animation cinema.

From the present and the very near future, pieces from very recent films are shown: the still unpublished by Joana Imaginário, "A casa para guardar o tempo" (The house that holds the time) , with world premiere scheduled for this year’s edition of Monstra, and "O casaco rosa" (The pink coat), by Mónica Santos, in competition at the festival.

Both films have very particular characteristics: all the puppets in "A casa para guardar o tempo" were made in paper and all the characters in Mónica Santos' film are… coats.

In the exhibition you can also see puppets, sets and accessories from other Portuguese animation films made by José Miguel Ribeiro, Bruno Caetano or Vítor Hugo.

The Puppet Museum will be like this, between February 24 and April 23, 2023, "A casa para guardar o tempo", present and future of stop motion animation made in Portugal.
