Windows of Portugal

The Cascais Cultural Center receives photographs by Fernando de Sousa Carvalho, who recorded the windows he found on trips from north to south of Portugal over the years.

In a joint initiative of the Fundação D. Luís I and the Municipality of Cascais, within the scope of the Bairro dos Museus program, the Cascais Cultural Center presents the exhibition “Janelas de Portugal”, by photographer Fernando de Sousa Carvalho, which takes the public for a trip through Portugal through its windows.

The windows that Fernando de Sousa Carvalho photographed in cities such as Guimarães, Viana do Castelo, Braga, Ponte de Lima, Porto, Aveiro, Ilhavo, Buçaco, Cúria, Coimbra, Tomar, Alpiarça, Caldas da Rainha, Santarém, Golegã and Tavira are evidence the intersection between tradition and the most diverse artistic currents – from baroque to new art and beyond – which is revealed in architectural forms and expressions in the country's buildings, and an account of the History of Portugal and the culture of its people.

In the 91 photographs that make up the exhibition, there is an implicit testimony by the photographer about the human component that lies behind the architecture and ornamentation of these structures. Fernando de Sousa Carvalho's gaze captures images capable of arousing interest and appreciation for the aesthetics of those objects, but also curiosity about the life that happens and lurks on the other side of those windows.
