It's a statue that pays homage to journalism: it depicts a barefoot newsboy next to the bust of Eduardo Coelho, one of the founders of the "Diário de Notícias" newspaper. It is true that the tribute to the founder is important, as it evokes the story of this man born in Coimbra in 1835. Orphaned at the age of thirteen, he was sent to Lisbon to work in commerce, but it was not in commerce that he succeeded. In 1864, Eduardo Coelho founded the "Diário de Notícias" newspaper with the businessman Tomás Quintino Antunes. The newspaper was based in Bairro Alto, on Rua dos Remolares, later renamed Rua Diário de Notícias, hence the statue in one of Lisbon's most beautiful gardens. But the true homage is to the newsboy: the "Diário de Notícias" innovated by selling, for the first time, a popular newspaper in the city streets at a fixed price that remained the same for years: ten reis coins.
