Jewels for Democracy

Jewellery is a symbolic representation of power, be it monetary, spiritual or political.

They are also conventionally associated with female figures and, in a month in which Portugal celebrates a historic date, the 25th April Revolution, the Lisboa International Biennial of Contemporary Jewellery is organising an exhibition featuring a set of jewels made for women who played an important role in the transition to democracy or suffered particularly under the dictatorship.

The works on display honour well-known or anonymous activists for democracy and freedom in Portugal or around the world.
