-

Exhibition on the world of abandoned children at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa

Détails

“Children of All… Children of Whom? The Foundlings of the Wheel of Lisbon” is the exhibition that will be on display at the Museum of São Roque, from 17 November 2025 to 29 March 2026.

This exhibition will showcase a selection of the 90,000 foundling tokens preserved in the institution’s Historical Archive and is a part of the nomination of these documents for inclusion in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.

The Historical Archive of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa preserves nearly 90,000 foundling tokens — documents and other objects that accompanied the children left in the foundling wheel — organized into five documentary series dating from 1658 to 1939.

This is the largest collection of its kind in the world and soon a selection of these tokens will be featured in the exhibition “Children of All… Children of Whom? The Foundlings of the Wheel of Lisbon”.
