A Mina examines the past of São Pedro da Cova, a town to this day haunted by the coal mines that for two centuries assured the survival of the community, but also their dependence on the extractive industry. Once the mines were closed in 1970, the population met with social and material deprivation, a crisis worsened in 2001 when tons of toxic waste from Siderurgia Nacional were dumped at the mining site, with tragic consequences for the environment.

André Amálio and Tereza Havlíčková approached the locals to revisit their past as a mining community, and to voice their current social and environmental issues. A Mina dives into personal memory to bring up troubling questions that matter to all of us. On stage, locals from São Pedro da Cova will share from their lives with the audience.
