The image of St. Anthony in the procession

-

The image of Saint Anthony is one of the central elements of the procession that every year fills Lisbon with faith and tradition.

Détails

The procession of St. Anthony, one of the most traditional in Lisbon, began by departing from the Convent of St. Francis to the Church of St. Anthony, attracting large crowds. After the extinction of the religious orders in 1834, the procession was stopped and the church was closed.
With the reopening of the church in the 1930s, worship was revitalized and, in 1952, the Lisbon City Council resumed the procession, on a reduced route around the Church of Santo António.
In 1973, a new sculpture of St. Anthony was commissioned to be used in the procession in place of the older, heavier image on the main altar, which also ensured its preservation.
In 1981, during the commemorations of the 750th anniversary of Saint Anthony's death, the route was extended to include the Alfama district, with patron saints from other churches joining the procession.
And to this day, at 5pm on June 13, the image of Saint Anthony departs from his church, accompanied by the municipal authorities, the Franciscan family and other religious congregations, the traditional band and countless devotees who accompany the entire procession through the winding scenery of Alfama, giving color and shape to the authentic parochialism that makes Lisbon so unique and special.
