90 years of the Grupo Amigos de Lisboa

Founded in 1936 as a not-for-profit civic association, it won the Lisbon City Council Gold Medal in 1956 and was given the status of Public Utility in 1980. Created as a forum for plural debate, GAL has contributed to shaping the public consciousness of Lisbon, examining the city’s rich and diverse past, the substantial changes of the present and often utopian outlooks on the future.

GAL has made a mark in defence of heritage on several occasions, for example in the remodelling of Avenida da Liberdade (1955), the General Plan for Urbanisation and Circulation in Lisbon (1967), and the preservation of Parque Ventura Terra (1983). In addition, the institution has formed a small but important museological collection, as well as a specialised library of around 8,000 volumes.

Since its creation, GAL has brought together many illustrious experts on the city, including Luís Pastor de Macedo, Gustavo de Matos Sequeira, Augusto Vieira da Silva, Norberto de Araújo and João Pinto de Carvalho. The capital’s history has been the group’s constant theme, with the publication of 168 volumes of Olisipo magazine and books and records relating to themed congresses. For years, the magazine’s cover was designed by Almada Negreiros, one of GAL’s first members.

It is this extraordinary history, initiated 90 years ago by a group who loved everything about the city, that the Museum of Lisbon explores in the exhibition For the love of Lisbon, in partnership with the Grupo Amigos de Lisboa.
