In the year that marks the centenary of the death of the Italian composer Giancomo Puccini and 120 years since the premiere of one of his most emblematic works, Madame Butterfly is once again on stage in Lisboa.
May 8 - Casino Estoril
May 9 - Coliseu dos Recreios
Set in Japan, Madame Butterfly, described by Puccini as the "most deeply felt and creative" and one of the most performed operas in the Italian repertoire, tells the tragic story of a beautiful young 15-year-old geisha, "delicate as a butterfly", Cio-Cio-San (Butterfly), who falls in love with Pinkerton, a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, and ends up sacrificing her family, religion and life itself, for him.
