Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

A unique spot with an incredible view over Lisbon. Almost mystical in its calmness, this is a perfect place for sitting back and contemplating the city.

The Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is one of Lisbon’s major landmarks. It is also one of the calmest places to look at the city, despite its stunning panoramic view. Just a few metres from the Miradouro da Graça, it is a marvellous point from which to observe the capital. To its left is the church of Graça and the castle, with houses tumbling down its hillside, standing guard above the city. In the background, the river and the Tagus estuary glow and light up the rooftops in Baixa, the ruins of Carmo and the pastel tones of the Avenidas Novas. All this from the place where the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, assembled his troops to conquer Lisbon. Nine centuries later, it is the Lady of the Mount (Senhora do Monte) and her chapel, founded in 1147, who conquers all before her.
