20 years of euro in your pocket

Twenty years ago, the central banks of the euro area launched the biggest monetary transition in history: the use of a single currency, the Euro.

In 2022, we celebrate 20 years since the euro started to circulate. Banks, ATMs, retailers and the public in general were stocked, but on the first day of the year, in 2002, Portugal witnessed a huge turnout to exchange bills and coins, which created long lines a bit all over the country.

There was a whole preparation process prior to the moment of the currency exchange.

The production of euro bills started in July 1999 in 15 factories throughout Europe.

One of them was the Portuguese VALORA.

In this exhibition you can find out more about the euro, which is the world's second most used currency.
