The Museum of Lisbon – Roman Theatre is hosting the temporary exhibition Esa Minoría Inmensa [A vast minority], produced by the Consortium of the Monumental City of Mérida and the Mérida International Classical Theatre Festival, which focuses on forgotten performers from our past: the common people of the Roman Empire.
Behind the marbles, the conquests and the official accounts, a different and essential reality existed: the common people. Peasants, artisans, soldiers, traders, the enslaved and the liberated, women, gladiators, prostitutes, actors and foreigners composed the silent majority of the Roman population.
A minority in the legends, they were in fact huge in number and importance.
The exhibition Esa Minoría Inmensa [A vast minority] aims to give them back their voice and leading role.
