On April 25, the Assembly of the Republic marks Freedom Day by opening the doors of the Palácio de São Bento to the public, for an afternoon dedicated to culture, citizenship, and the celebration of the values of April.

Between 2:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., visitors are invited to take part in a diverse programme combining music, dance, visual arts, creative workshops, exhibitions, and free visits, designed for all ages and audiences.

The event begins at 2:30 p.m., in the Main Entrance Hall, with a performance by the National Conservatory Dance School.

Throughout the afternoon, the Cloister will host panama hat printing workshops, as well as moments of vocal and musical expression, including the Voice Circle, led by Skoola – Urban Music Academy.

At 3:00 p.m., in the Passos Manuel Library, the lecture “April 25 in the Humorous Press” will take place, presented by Álvaro Costa de Matos, Coordinator of the Lisbon Municipal Hemeroteca.
Families with children may take part in “Adventure at the Palace!”, a treasure hunt for children aged 6 to 12, and in a watercolour workshop. Both activities have limited capacity and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
At 4:30 p.m., the Plenary Chamber will host “Freedom Out Loud”, a performance by artist and poet Huba, followed by urban dance workshops and performances, including Breaking, by Maxmomentum, in the Senate Room.

The programme concludes with a showcase concert by Milhanas, moderated by Maria Morango, at the House of Parliament – Interpretive Centre.

Throughout the event, from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., visitors will be able to enjoy free visits to the Palácio de São Bento and the House of Parliament – Interpretive Centre, as well as participate in various activities held in different spaces.

Highlights include face painting, collaborative murals led by artist Fred Aranha, the initiative “Drawing Freedom” with the Urban Sketchers Portugal Association, and the exhibition “Freeing Fashion, Dressing the Constitution”, featuring 1970s outfits, in partnership with the National Costume Museum, on display in the Noble Hall.

Visitors will also be able to see several exhibitions, including:

“50 Years of the Constitution”, a bibliographic and documentary exhibition;
“Freedom”, a painting exhibition by Eduarda Pedro;
“Political Campaign: Posters from the 1976 Legislative Elections”, at the House of Parliament.
