Arraiais Populares - Lisboa on the Street

In June the city’s neighbourhoods are invaded with the aroma of grilled sardines, peppers and manjerico that is so typical of the Santos Populares celebrations.

“Lisboa smells of flowers and the sea”, said Amália Rodrigues in her song “Cheira Bem, Cheira a Lisboa”.

However, in June the city’s neighbourhoods are invaded with the aroma of grilled sardines, peppers and manjerico that is so typical of the Santos Populares celebrations.

As well as food, which is served outdoors, the festivities bring music – loud and in Portuguese – to streets decorated with colourful ribbons and festival ornaments, and by crowds of people dancing.

Alcântara, Belém, Benfica, Campolide, Carnide, Estrela, Misericórdia, Olivais, Parque das Nações, Santa Maria Maior and São Vicente are just some of the neighbourhoods filled with entertainment.

June, across the city’s historic neighbourhoods. Free entry.
