For six months, the photographer Jorge Duarte Estevão travelled by train from Funcheira train station, in the Alentejo, to Portas do Cerco, in Macau. Over 197 days, the journey crossed countless borders and bumped into others.

Closed Borders is a visual summary of the photographer’s discoveries along the old Silk Road, where ancient customs and traditions remain unchanged.

From portraits and candid situations, to modern and traditional architecture. From Kyrgyzstan’s nomadism to the ancient culture of China.

The focus on black and white elements, textures and shadows causes a reaction and evokes a state of mind, be it surprise, admiration or empathy.

The approach, through simple elements or bold compositions, shows the diversity along the route.

It is not intended or desired to be seen as a linear journey.

Rather, the images lead us to find similarities and also to discover the differences between customs, culture, religion, peoples and landscapes — from Portugal to Macau.
