Lisbon City Council marks the centenary of Gérard Castello-Lopes with the exhibition Photographs 1956–2005, bringing together iconic images that evoke the photographer’s trajectory, based on a selection by David Castello-Lopes.
Lisbon City Council marks the centenary of the birth of Gérard Castello-Lopes (1925–2011) with the exhibition Gérard Castello-Lopes – Photographs 1956–2005, highlighting the author’s singular contribution to the national and international cultural landscape. Considered one of the most important Portuguese photographers of the 20th century, Castello-Lopes developed a remarkable body of work, deeply rooted in the observation of everyday life and a keen attention to the urban environment.
The exhibition brings together a set of iconic images, captured in different places and moments, reflecting the photographer’s visual journey over several decades. The selection, made by his son David Castello-Lopes, presents an intimate and representative portrait of his artistic production.
Alongside his professional activity in the film distribution sector, inherited from the family company Filmes Castello-Lopes, the photographer developed a passion for imagery influenced by the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson. Between the 1950s and 1960s, he documented everyday scenes in cities such as Lisbon, Brussels, Rome and Prague. After a period of interruption, he returned to photography in the 1980s, consolidating recognition of his work.
On display at the Lisbon Municipal Archive | Photographic, the exhibition celebrates this legacy, inviting the public to revisit more than four decades of a singular artistic journey, marked by sensitivity, precision and a profound human dimension.
Monday to Saturday. Closed on Sundays and public holidays.
