Giselle

Georges Garcia’s choreographic version, which was premiered in 1987, goes on stage again in Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, accompanied by the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa (Portuguese Symphony Orchestra.

‘Giselle’ is a story of love and betrayal, in which a peasant girl is driven to madness and death after feeling betrayed by count Albrecht, who disguises himself as a peasant and convinces her that his promises of eternal love are true.

The young girl is buried in the woods and becomes a Wili, a ghost which attracts men and makes them dance until they die from exhaustion.

After her death, Hilarion, a peasant who is in love with Giselle, comes to mourn at her grave.

The queen of the Wilis orders Giselle to attract Hilarion to dance.

Giselle dances with Albrecht all night long and helps him stay alive until sunrise.

At sunrise, Giselle returns to her grave and Hilarion stays alone, destroyed by pain.
