International Museum Day

Created in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the purpose of this day is to encourage reflection on the role of museums in society’s development.

Currently, museums serve a number of purposes as cultural platforms, extending beyond their mission to collect, conserve, communicate and exhibit, offering their visitors an ability to create and share.

It's also commemorated the European Museum Night, an initiative started in 2005 to encourage visitors to Portuguese museums to enjoy a different cultural experience.

Through the night the museums will open their doors and offer such activities as theatre and dance shows, concerts and guided and staged tours.
