Jean Painlevé’s first exhibition in Portugal brings together a collection of films, photographs and objects that provide a journey through the work of one of the most peculiar figures of 20th century French culture.
As a pioneering documentary filmmaker and wildlife photographer, especially of underwater fauna, Painlevé’s films are the result of a contrast between documenting marine life behaviour and his artistic flair for film techniques and editing that brought him closer to some of the Surrealist movements of the time.
