Details

Although the original text has not survived to this day, the present author of the libretto, Ricardo Neves-Neves, presents the popular hero, Maria da Fonte, as an intense, brave woman, respecting the original plot.

The intrigue, performed by Coro do Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and by the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, unfolds based on the theme of a betrayal involving Maria da Fonte, her lover Ludovino, a rich farmer, and her sister, Joana.

There is also a conspiracy between the local administrator, Vilar, and the abbot Cortições, who is implied to be Maria da Fonte’s and Joana’s father, to send the boys to the army in order to fight the rabble.
