Menez

“Menez” highlights the exceptionality of the four-decade work of the artist Menez, one of the exponents of Portuguese art of the 20th century.

The exhibition is an initiative of Fundação D. Luís I and the Municipality of Cascais within the scope of the Bairro dos Museus program and can be seen between March 10 and October 2, 2022 at Sala Zero of the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego Museum.

The retrospective exhibition “MENEZ” presents four decades of the artist’s work, allowing a comprehensive understanding of its different phases and practices, through a careful selection of 29 works that move from abstractionism to figurativism.

Maria Inês da Silva Carmona Ribeiro da Fonseca (1926 – 1995), or Menez, as she is artistically known, was a Portuguese artist born in Lisbon and who for years lived in several cities around the world, such as Buenos Aires, Stockholm, Paris and Rome. Before that, she went to Switzerland, where she moved with her family at just two years old, where she completed most of her schooling. She returned to Portugal at the age of twenty, followed by a two-year stay in Washington, D.C., in the United States.
