In this exhibition, the past and future of the Torreão Poente in the Praça do Comércio combine to relate the history of one of Lisboa’s most iconic architectural symbols. The narrative begins in the first years of the 16th century, when King Manuel ordered the construction of a new royal palace that included the Torreão do Paço da Ribeira. From there, it describes the many times the building was taken down and rebuilt, including the construction of the towers on the eastern and western extremes of the new Praça do Comércio on the orders of the Marquis of Pombal. The exhibition ends with the Torreão Poente as an integral part of the Museu de Lisboa and with the presentation of a model and architectural plans for the next stage in the life of the tower.
