Oleanna

-

Oleanna, by David Mamet (1992), depicts the confrontation between a university professor and a student who accuses him of sexual harassment.

Details

The play unfolds almost entirely in the professor’s office and centres on an intense battle over speech — and, therefore, over power. Language, used as a tool of domination, is also the medium through which realities are built.

In Oleanna, nothing needs to happen for something to be perceived as real. Mamet exposes the tensions between gender, status and communication, in a narrative where there are no clear winners — “whichever side you choose, it’s wrong.

” Beyond its topical relevance, the play is a huge performing challenge, demanding precision and intensity from the two actors.
