Rituals of light | The bright of Nossa Senhora das Candeias

-

Light has always been part of our lives, even before we knew how to make, harness or exploit it. The history of humankind, our history, is built around light and its absence and everything we do fits with this premise.

Details

This small exhibition explores the evolution of objects used to illuminate our lives, from Roman and 7th-century BC forms of lighting  to medieval lamps, culminating in the electric light and LED strips.

Through a series of pieces, we follow the technical, aesthetic and symbolic transformations of these objects, which reflect changes in lifestyle, materials and society’s relationship with light.  A brief spotlight on the ways humankind has sought to vanquish darkness.
